Athens (otherwise known as the Athena) is the capital city of the Hellenic Republic of Greece. At the same time, it is the chief administrative district of Attica. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and its existence dates back to over 3,000 years ago. This city has contributed immensely to the western culture and today it is the financial and spiritual center for Greece. Acropolis: It first served as the venue for the city’s oldest shrines and as a stronghold of the kings but later, it was reserved for the people of Athens alone. It was a religious center for ancient Athens and received that status from during the time of Pericles. It does reflect the humane values and thoughts that the Greek culture has and the impact they have in the present day. The Acropolis measures 320m/350 yards that is from west to east and from south to north, it measures 156m/170 yards.
Erechtheion: It was built between 421 B.C and 395 B. C and is therefore, the youngest feature of the Acropolis and it has many ancient sanctuaries. The temple of Athena Polias occupies the eastern part while the western part lays the tombs of king Erechtheus who allowed his full name to be used by the structure. The western side was altered during the Roman period and received its two story form. What this change brought about was that the interior lost its original features.
City Center: The city center is home to most of the sites that are worth watching in Athens. One of these sites in the City Center is the Agora. Agora was excavated by American Archeologists years between 1931-41 and 1946-60 and there a district that was made up of 400 buildings were discovered that was in existence since the 11th century. Therefore it is one of the most visited places not only in Athens but also in the entire Mediterranean region.
