National Archaeological Museum, Athens

Posted by admin in Athens Tour, Fun, General, Hotels, Tips | Leave a comment

The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is popular for preserving the pieces of arts and artifacts from many archaeological locations around the Greece, from the prehistoric times to late antiquity. It is being reputed as one of the great museums of the world and has collection of Greek sculptures, artifacts and works of art from around the Globe. It is located in the Exsrhia area at central Athens between Epirus Street, Bounoulinas Street and Tositsas Street which is an entrance at the Patission Street as close to the historical buildings at the Athens Polytechnic.

The cult of preserving the archaeological works as in form of museum started in Greece by the then prime minister of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias in Aigina in 1829. And since then, the archaeological museum and works are on the move at different centers of exhibition places until 1858. The regular movement of the works of art stagnated when in the year an international architectural competition was organized for the location and architectural design of the new museum. The thought of the current spot of museum in the mind of planners arrived in 1866 and the museum was completed by 1889. The funds for creating the museum started from the Greek Government, the Greek Archaeological Society and the Society of Mycenae. The major donators for the museum were Eleni Tositsa who donated the land for the building of the museum, Demetrios and Nikolaos Vernardakis from Saint Petersburg who donated a large amount of money for the completion of the museum.

The name of the museum in the start was The Central Museum and was renamed to its present name in 1881 by Prime Minister of Greece Charilaos Trikoupis. In 1887, the renowned archaeologist Valerios Stais became the curator of the museum and it was during the World War II, the museum shut down its doors to antiquities and was sealed around in particular protective boxes and was buried as to avoid the destruction and looting. At the south wing of the museum, there is located the Epigraphic Museum, that has the richest collection of inscriptions in the world. The inscriptions museum elaborated around 1953 and 1960 with the architectural designs of Patroklos Karantinos.

The entire museum is designed in an impressive neo-classical style that was very popular during that time and age in Europe and was filled with accordance with the classical style artifacts that it keeps. The initial plan of the museum was thought by the architect Ludwig Lange and then after was modified by Panages Kalkos who was the main architect of the museum. The front of the museum is a large neo- classic design garden as decorated with sculptures.
